In Antigua, the pinnacle of all the cultural celebrations is Carnival ! This truely Caribbean fiesta has elements that are deeply rooted in the original festivities that were held to celebrate the emancipation of slavery in 1834. Now it is a 10 day event that kicks off in the last week of July and ends during the first week of August.
The festival features colourful parades, Carnival Queen pageants, jump ups, the local calypso, soca, and steel pan music competitions and live entertainment out on the streets. The culmination is 2 days of dancing and revelry in the capital St John's, with carnival bands full of merrymakers dressed in elegantly decorated colourful costumes.
For visitors to the island, it is perhaps the best time to be in Antigua to get a real feel for the culture of the country and to understand the utter joy the islanders still feel about marking this moment in the island's history. As a visitor you will be welcome to join in the spontaneous fun that surrounds you.
